Welcome to Foreign Languages and Literatures!
FLL offers basic courses in all of the languages you see on the left. “Classics” includes both Latin and Ancient Greek. For Hebrew, students may choose either Biblical or Modern Hebrew. In Chinese and Spanish, the department offers special courses for “heritage speakers” (students who used the language in their families).
Undergraduate majors are currently available in Classics, French, German, Italian Studies, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. These programs also offer minors. Additionally, the department has minors in Chinese and Portuguese. Minors and “double majors” in a foreign language are especially popular with undergraduates at Purdue.
FLL has Doctoral programs in French, German, Spanish (with the possible inclusion of Portuguese) and Second Language Acquisition; and Masters programs in all of those areas just mentioned plus Japanese. Faculty members in FLL enjoy a reputation for excellence in research. In keeping with this profile, the department sponsors a monograph series in romance literatures, and is the headquarters for three scholarly journals. For more information, see the “Publications” link on the right.
